Hypnotherapy - Trauma

Hypnotherapy is a wonderful tool which can be utilised to allieviate emotional suffering caused by tragic life events. Some people are haunted by vague or clear memories of extremely painful events, this can include memories of terror, horror, victimisation or loss. (just to name a few)
These events may be recent or long past, but the impact on a person's life can be dramatic and ever present. Nothing will ever undo what happened in the past or prevent a previous attack from happening, but there are ways to undo what the past is doing in the present, with hypnotherapy, there are ways to reduce the pain of the trauma you are dealing with.

  • War
  • Torture
  • Rape
  • Child sexual or physical assault
  • Physical assault
  • Being kidnapped
  • Terrorism
  • A natural disaster (e.g. a bushfire, flood or cyclone)
  • A major car accident
  • Being diagnosed with a potentially fatal illness e.g. cancer
  • Finding the body of someone who has committed suicide or been murdered

(The Intrusive Symptoms include:)
  • Distressing thoughts or images
  • Nightmares about the event
  • Feeling or acting as if the traumatic event were recurring
  • Intense psychological distress when exposed to something that triggers memories of the traumatic event.
  • Physical symptoms such as sweating, muscle tension and rapid heartbeat when exposed to things that trigger memories of the traumatic event.

It is believed that in a session, hypnosis is not something that is 'done' to you, but rather a state of mind that your therapist helps you to achieve. Did you know that you can stop anxiety attacks with self-hypnosis? This does not refer to swinging a pocket watch in front of your eyes and repeating "I am getting sleepier and sleepier..." During a panic attack, your rational mind is under siege and difficult to access. But because hypnotherapy works on your subconscious mind, you can use it to calm yourself with a simple physical trigger. In many instances, she teaches her clients how they may take themselves in and out of hypnosis, enabling them to continue work begun in the session at home. Hypnotherapy is generally considered a safe method of treatment.
